CHEM 0103 - Chemistry of the Life Sciences Credits: 4
Explores the chemistry of living systems with applications in health, exercise, nutrition and our environment. The course will build from a discussion of basic chemical principles including measurements and atomic and molecular structure. It introduces principles of organic chemistry using fatty acids and carbohydrates as examples and explores solution chemistry including acids and bases as well as chemical equilibrium and intermolecular interactions. Finally, it applies these concepts to biochemical topics such as enzyme catalysis and metabolism. The discussion and laboratory experience is an inquiry into connections between evidence and scientific claims while applying concepts from the lecture portion. Three hours lecture, one hour discussion, two hours laboratory per week.
