SOCW 0658 - Advanced Policy LGBTQ + Population Credits: 3
This special topic advanced policy course will focus on the social welfare needs of individuals within Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ populations. Historically, social policies in the United States have failed to protect the dignity and human rights of LGBTQ+ people. This course will examine the experiences of LGBTQ+ people and the marked oppression social policies and practices have imposed on them, their families and communities. In this course, students will learn about the development of LGBTQ identity-formation, as well as the impact of social policies on LGBTQ+ people across the life span. The intersections of race, gender, class, sexual orientation, religion, advanced age, and gender identity will also be explored. The course will also focus on aspects of society where LGBTQ+ people have faced systemic discrimination - such as in education, employment, marriage, health care, housing, and more. Critical policy changes at both state and federal levels that have been brought about by historical and contemporary advocacy movements will be reviewed.
